The post Dawn Internet’s X Account Hacked: Phishing Scams Target Users via Telegram appeared first on Coinpedia Fintech News
The X account of the decentralized, autonomous wireless network project Dawn Internet was doxed and hacked on January 15. According to ScamSniffer, the attackers used the account to share phishing content that had intentions to trick fans into supplying personal information.
Evolving Phishing Tactics
At first, attackers shared text links for phishing easily seen to the general public. But to avoid getting caught, they changed tactics by forwarding a Telegram channel link. Bots were used in this channel and the malicious ones included; SafeguardsAuthenticationRobot which tricked users into logging into Telegram with their usernames and passwords.
It is quite common nowadays that cybercriminals use social media to stage complex phishing attacks. They build upon that trust by adding reliable accounts and forums, such as Telegram, which serve to disguise their scams better and, therefore, raise the chances of fooling the users.
Interestingly, Telegram was found to be involved in the distribution of phishing tools and kits for similar misdeeds.
Recommendations For Users
- Always verify sources: It is always important to check the veracity of messages, specifically those that compel the reader to click on the link to sign in or fill in personal wallet details.
- Be cautious with links: Users are advised not to click on links received in their inbox unless they are from a very trusted source.
- Enable 2-factor authentication (2FA): Improve the level of account security by enabling the additional safety layer from unauthorized access i.e. 2FA.
