Scheduled maintenance keeps Gemini down for hours

According to its official status page, the U.S-based crypto exchange Gemini was down from 10 pm ET on Dec. 15. The Gemini website appears to be functioning as of press time. Yet, the status page still states that “some systems are currently experiencing outages.”

According to the exchange, Gemini Spaceship was to undergo scheduled maintenance from Dec. 15 into the early hours of Dec. 16. However, the crypto platform has extended this down period by more than 3 hours without further explanation.

Its status page reads:

“Gemini is investigating reports of potential service disruptions. All customer accounts and funds remain completely secure. Further updates to follow.”

On Dec. 15, the status page revealed that some users received 2-factor authentication messages even when they did not “specify non-SMS modalities.” The issue has been fixed, and the exchange is currently monitoring the situation.

The exchange had previously experienced downtime on Nov. 16 due to an Amazon Web Services EBS outage with one of its primary databases.

Meanwhile, crypto lender Genesis’ decision to pause withdrawals impacted the Winklevoss twins-led exchange. Gemini formed an ad hoc committee with other creditors to help its earn users regain their funds.

Gemini is still working on several issues as of press time. The maintenance was due to end at 5.30 am ET, yet no further update on the matter has been released. Additionally, Gemini credit card services are still disrupted, while GBP deposits and Gemini Earn have had issues since November, with the last update on Dec. 7 without resolution.
